Who Is Eligible to Apply

 

Must be eighteen (18) years of age by Class Start Date. 

Must have completed high school or be on track to complete high school. 

Must be a United States citizen

Must possess a valid driver’s license

Must desire to serve the Memphis community and exhibit good character

Must be free of felony convictions
and drug use

Preferences will be given to candidates that currently have college credit which
may be applied to a criminal justice degree at a local community college

Must have completed the Tennessee Promise and FAFSA before class start date.

Must be a United States citizen

Must possess a valid driver’s license

The Hiring Process

Complete the initial (City of Memphis) online application.

  2. Advance to review, then Submit.
  3. Testing for Blue Path applicants will take place between March – May.

Complete intake processing

If you meet the minimum/preferred qualifications, a recruiter will reach out and you will be scheduled for intake at the Memphis Police Department Training Academy.

You must bring and present the following documentation to your intake appointment:

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Original/Certified Birth Certificate
  • High School Diploma (not required for students currently enrolled in high school)

If applicable:

  • Military Forms – DD214 (Member 4 Copy)/DD256/NGB22/Disciplinary Articles, etc.
  • Military Letter of Good Standing (for current military reserve officers)
  • Court documents or marriage license supporting name change
  • Criminal expungements and/or supporting documents

Only applicants who complete the MPD Employment Application will be allowed to advance and self-schedule the battery of
tests.

Self-schedule a battery of entry test (BAT)

After completing your intake processing, you will receive instructions via email to schedule a date to attend a battery of test (BAT) for the position of Police Service Technician (PST). Testing for Blue Path applicants will take place between March – May.

The BAT will include:

  • A running test
  • An obstacle course
  • A written exam
  • A behavioral interview

All components for the battery of test are conducted on the date scheduled. The day of testing is expected to last 4-5
hours.

All applicants are required to bring and present a valid driver’s license to be admitted for testing.

All applicants must successfully pass each of the four (4) test components to advance in the employment process. Applicants are only allowed to fail and retake the same test twice per application session.

  • Running Test (qualifying time for 1.5 miles = 17:38 min/sec or less)
  • Obstacle Course (completion time for simulation of foot chase = 2:40 min/sec or less
  • A five second penalty will be imposed for each obstacle the candidate is unable to complete after two attempts

  • Written Exam (take a practice test by clicking “Written Exam” – enter this code: FEF92CBC6CDF75D2
  • Behavioral Interview (does not require applicant to change clothing)

Accept contingent job offer

Contingent job offers are given with consideration of the applicant’s ability to successfully complete and pass the remaining screenings and assessments.

Candidates are selected on individual merits; not a first come, first serve basis. Police Service Technician (PST) classes will be filled – in according to budgetary allowance – based on the candidates’ succession through all phases of the employment process.

Successfully pass the background investigation screening

Successfully test and pass a battery of pre-employment screenings and reviews

Medical Assessment

The Medical Assessment is administered by Occupational Health Services and consists of a full physical exam by a licensed physician and drug screen.

Psychological Exam

The Psychological Exam consists of two steps: a written exam and a clinical interview with a licensed psychologist. The clinical interview is the final step in the hiring process before being provided a final job offer.

Updated Background Check

The updated background check is performed by our background investigations unit.

Receive and accept the final job offer and complete 6 weeks of paid training as a PST

You will receive an email with the final job offer for the position of Police Service Technician via email. Once you accept and complete the final steps in the hiring/onboarding process, you will enter into the Memphis Police Training Academy as a PST Recruit.

A successful PST Recruit candidate will complete a 6-week training program and graduate to become a qualified PST Officer, followed by a 6-month probationary period under the supervision of a Field Training Officer (F.T.O.)

Once you reach the minimum qualifications for Police Recruit, you will transition out of the PST Program and into the Memphis Police Training Academy as a Police Recruit.

Note: The entire employment process generally takes two (2) to six (6) months – beginning with the completion of an online application- to determine an applicant’s suitability for employment.
