Your training begins at the Memphis Police Training Academy as a Police Officer Recruit, where individuals will learn real-life skills to become and improve their law enforcement abilities, including but not limited to —

The Memphis Police Department’s Training Academy (MPDTA) is nationally recognized as an Accredited Public Safety Training Academy. The MPDTA campus offers state-of-the-art training to more than 50+ law enforcement agencies throughout the region and the state of Tennessee to prepare individuals for a productive career as a Law Enforcement Officer.
MPDTA’s Mission
To provide law enforcement training and education that meet the needs of the Memphis Police Department, the City of Memphis, the State of Tennessee, and the law enforcement community throughout the region.
Classroom instructions for basic training include, but are not limited to, Tennessee Annotated law, policy, procedures, firearm and physical training.

Upon graduating from the Academy, regional recruits will return to their respective law enforcement agency as a TN P.O.S.T. certified law enforcement officer. Memphis Police Recruits will be assigned to one of (4) four shifts at one of our nine (9) Police Stations throughout the city – under the supervision of a FTO (Field Training Officer) – providing On-the-job training support and evaluation, where recruits will apply their Academy training skills, working as a probationary patrol officer for 12 months.
- Working alongside the community to solve problem and prevent crimes
- Diffusing potentially volatile situations
- Patrolling assigned areas, watching for suspicious activities
- Investigating crime scenes
- Interviewing and arresting suspects
- Responding to routine and emergency calls
- Maintaining peace at public meetings and events
- Assisting the fire department, paramedics and EMT’s in emergency response
- Making arrests
- Responding to traffic accidents
- Completing incident reports
- Conducting traffic enforcement
- Issuing traffic citations
The Memphis Police Department Training Academy is a Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) Accredited Public Safety Training Facility and is a VA certified training facility.
